Every Woman - S1: Stories of Trailblazing Heroines

17 Oct 2018 10:00am
A crusade led by fearless women in the 19th and 20th centuries leads to empowered choices, voices and rights for every woman in Singapore.
About the Show

Today, Singaporean women can choose to climb corporate ladders, be full-time mums or even conquer the world’s steepest summits.

These achievements are a result of a collective crusade led by a series of extraordinary women in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Missionary Maria Dyer starts the first all-girls school to save the “Mui Tsai", or indentured Chinese servant girls. Post World War II, cabaret dancers band together to start a free school and lobby for tax concessions for members of their profession. Mrs George Lee and Shirin Fozdar campaign successfully to ban polygamy. By the late 1950s, Chan Choy Siong and Hoe Puay Choo become the first women in the Singapore electorate. In 1961, the Women’s Charter is passed, securing equal rights for every woman.
