Construction of West Coast station on Cross Island Line to start in first quarter of 2024
SINGAPORE: Construction works for West Coast station on the Cross Island Line (CRL) are expected to start in the first quarter of 2024, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Wednesday (Dec 6).
The MRT station will be located along West Coast Road at the site of the former Tanglin Secondary School.
"Given its proximity to existing infrastructures such as residential and commercial buildings, necessary traffic and utilities diversion works will be implemented in phases to mitigate the impact to residents and other stakeholders," said LTA.
It added that works are expected to be "challenging" due to the mixed ground conditions at the site, which include soft marine clay and hard sedimentary rocks.
"To ensure safety and ground stability, earth retaining and stabilising structures will be constructed prior to excavation and construction of the station structures," the authority said.
"LTA and the contractor will closely monitor the works and implement necessary mitigation measures to ensure safe and timely completion."
The CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line.
West Coast station is part of Phase 2 of the CRL, which is expected to begin passenger service in 2032.
It was previously announced that construction work for Clementi and King Albert Park stations - both interchange stations under Phase 2 of the project - will also begin in the first quarter of 2024.
Gamuda Berhad's Singapore branch has been awarded the contract to design and construct West Coast station at a contract value of around S$510 million.
"Gamuda Berhad has an established track record in infrastructure and residential projects both locally and abroad," said LTA.
Last year, the company, together with Wai Fong Construction, was awarded a contract in a joint venture to design and construct Defu station. Gamuda Berhad is also currently involved in the construction of Gali Batu Bus Depot.
THE CROSS ISLAND LINE
The fully underground CRL will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors, linking major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.
Almost half of its stations will serve as interchanges with other rail lines.
The CRL will be constructed in three phases.
The first phase is 29km long, comprising 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. All civil contracts for this phase have been awarded.
CRL2, announced in September 2022, is approximately 15km long and comprises six stations: Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast and Jurong Lake District.
"Engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 are ongoing and more details will be announced after these studies are completed," said LTA.
