Budget 2023 debate: Darryl David on targeted support to cushion rising costs

11:03 Min

This year's Budget sends a signal on how the wealthy can and should contribute more to nation-building, said MP Darryl David. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22), he pointed out that raising consumption-based taxes will potentially increase the tax base from which the Government can bring about social transfers from those who can afford it to those who need more help and support. This approach is balanced and fair, he said. He also said he is heartened that the Government has, through this year's Budget, further strengthened its commitment to support the majority of Singaporeans, especially those who need an additional leg up. The enhanced GST vouchers and various support payouts under the Assurance Package will help to cushion some of the impact from the rising cost of living. He urged the Government to continue to support the more vulnerable communities through direct and targeted short-term assistance.
