Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Baey Yam Keng on new scheme for singles to rent a public flat
Individuals applying for public rental flats often find it hard to find a flatmate to share the unit and even if they do, the pair may later run into difficulties living together. Making this point in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2), Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng offered a proposal. He suggested that HDB set up a new “single singles scheme”, on top of the Joint Singles Scheme. It would cater to those who do not have someone to apply with, or do not want to live with a stranger. The flats could be smaller, for a single person; and the rental higher, to justify the greater privacy.
