Fewer road disruptions as Singapore uses new approach to manage cables underground
Authorities in Singapore are rolling out a new approach to manage cables underground. Starting with Tengah New Town, Utility Specific Ducts will be extended to other major infrastructure projects, including new public housing, MRT lines and road networks. Cables are now run through one single shared system and they are encased in reinforced concrete. Manholes are built along at regular intervals, so workers can easily access them without having to break open the road above. Meanwhile, authorities are also developing a centralised platform to collect and manage underground utility data to help agencies better plan space beneath the ground for decades to come. Ivy Chok and Nasyrah Rohim report.
