Gan Siow Huang on support for more diverse eldercare arrangements

04:10 Min

The scope of work for migrant domestic workers (MDWs) is tightly circumscribed to ensure their well-being and safety. For example, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) cannot allow MDWs to be deployed in a business operation that could lead to overwork. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang highlighted this priority in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Thursday (Jul 6). She said the Government recognises the diverse needs of the elderly and their caregivers and has introduced a wide range of eldercare services to support households. These include home, personal and nursing care, as well as day care and community rehabilitation services. These options complement caregiving provided by MDWs and families, she said. She added that MOM will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Health and industry partners to explore new and holistic caregiving models to better support eldercare needs.
