Jamus Lim on achievements of Team Singapore Olympians and Paralympians
In Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16), MP Jamus Lim expressed his appreciation and admiration for all Singapore athletes, regardless of whether they medalled at the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games. He also spoke on unequal monetary rewards for able-bodied and disabled athletes, saying MPs on both sides of the aisle had raised the issue before and it was “clearly a matter of bipartisan concern”. Assoc Prof Lim explained why he believed Singapore should “take the economically and ethically justifiable step” of equalising the monetary awards offered to its Olympians and Paralympians in their respective award programmes. He said that the Government, as a key stakeholder in the International Olympic Committee, as the controlling body of the Tote Board which is the primary sponsor of the two sporting award programmes, and as the elected leaders of Singapore society, can make the call to do so. He noted that other countries have also taken steps towards parity.
