Koh Poh Koon on feasibility of producing seaweed locally
Singapore focuses on food items that have large consumer demand and can be grown in an efficient way, such as fish, vegetables and eggs. It currently does not have plans to allocate sea space for seaweed production. Nevertheless, it is prepared to consider proposals from the industry on new food types, including seaweed, that will help meet the goals of producing 30 per cent of Singapore's nutritional needs locally and sustainably by 2030. Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Koh Poh Koon said this in reply to an MP's questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 10).
