Budget 2024 debate: Shawn Huang on building for the future
Over the last 60 years, Singaporeans’ life expectancy has increased by 20 years or 31 per cent. By 2050, living up to a hundred years will become a norm for Singapore’s newborns. The question is, how do we value life and what would one do to have additional years of good health to do the important things in life? MP Shawn Huang raised this question in Parliament on Monday (Feb 26) and highlighted Singapore's continued investments in healthcare. He noted that Singapore’s economic achievement today was not due to sheer luck, but built over decades through the confluence of economic and social factors. He also said that Singapore is fortunate to have the reserves that it has to power the Budget today, due to the prudence and values of Singapore’s founding and past generations which have allowed its citizens to lead a longer and better life. He also emphasised the need for Singaporeans to work collectively and continue to build for a better tomorrow.
