An unexpected consequence of COVID-19 is that at the societal level, we found digital means to perform work from home at a reasonably productive level, said NMP Hoon Hian Teck. Speaking in Parliament on Friday (Feb 24), he said this could provide an opportunity to put in place policy measures to influence parenting styles and their decision on childbearing. He also said employers might find it more profitable to introduce some form of work-from-home arrangements even after the COVID-19 pandemic. The organisation of work, as well as the promotion and compensation system, could be adjusted to enable workers to have better control of their work schedule while keeping their full-time employment status. He wanted to know if the measures already in place to boost the total fertility rate remain important.
