Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 1: Josephine Teo on Singapore’s Smart Nation progress

11:55 Min

More people and businesses are satisfied with Government services since Singapore began its Smart Nation journey in 2014. Individual satisfaction rose from 73 per cent in 2016 to 84 per cent last year and among businesses, it was up from 64 per cent to 79 per cent. Communications and Information Minister Josephine Teo shared this in Parliament on Friday (Feb 24). She gave an example of the Health Appointment System which was set up in 2022 to make it easier to book pneumococcal and flu vaccination appointments. It will be expanded by mid-2023 to allow bookings for all the major recommended adult and child vaccinations. The Government is also doing more to safeguard the public from online harms. For example, a ScamShield chatbot will be launched on WhatsApp this year so that the public can report scam messages to the relevant authorities more easily. A tool has also been developed which proactively hunts for phishing sites that pose as Government agency websites, so that they can be removed. Mrs Teo said Singapore is collaborating with and learning from leading countries and companies in artificial intelligence. As Singapore refreshes its Smart Nation strategy, it will focus on three broad areas - enhancing opportunities for Singaporeans to flourish, ensuring trust and safety in the digital world and strengthening communities.
