Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 1: Sylvia Lim on lowering the voting age

03:05 Min

In Parliament on Friday (Feb 24), MP Sylvia Lim once again called for the voting age to be lowered from 21 to 18 to empower younger Singaporeans to have a say in national elections. She said in comparison to other countries, Singapore has become “an outlier” in keeping the voting age at 21. “What is so unique about our youths aged 18 to 21 that they should not be entrusted with the vote?” she asked, questioning the rationale behind Singapore’s stand. Ms Lim expressed hope that the Government would be as “open-minded” on the issue as Parliament has been in changing its position on Section 377A.
