Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 2: Desmond Choo on SAFRA’s evolution to promote understanding of defence as a shared mission
SAFRA will evolve beyond its roots as primarily a social club to take on a new role - helping Singaporeans understand that defence is not the responsibility of a few, but the mission of all. Minister of State for Defence Desmond Choo outlined plans in parliament on Friday (Feb 27). They include new variants of National Service (NS) experience camps for the public and defence heritage galleries in SAFRA clubhouses. Two new festivals will be launched - an “NS version of HYROX” focused on fitness this year, and the SAFRA Community Defence and Resilience Festival next year, with military exhibits and activities for the masses at multiple sites across Singapore. SAFRA will also boost support for national servicemen at all stages, from pre-enlistment to career transition. Sessions are also planned to keep NS alumni apprised of current defence issues and help them maintain social bonds.
