Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 1: Gan Kim Yong on Singapore being a 'climate realist'

18:46 Min

Singapore approaches climate change as a “climate realist”, Deputy Prime Minister and Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong told parliament on Thursday (Feb 26). He noted that even as the effects of climate change are becoming more pronounced, frequent and costly, global climate action is under strain. However, economics, technology and nature will eventually drive the global transformation towards a low-carbon future, he said. Mr Gan outlined Singapore’s stance on right-pricing and pacing of carbon tax, the “steady progress” the country is making in meeting its climate goals, and how it is supporting companies and workers to navigate and capture opportunities in the green transition.
